Eliud Kipchoge Wins Melbourne Marathon in Course Record of 2:09:10

Eliud Kipchoge delivered a memorable Melbourne Marathon debut on Sunday, October 11, winning in a course record of 2:09:10. The Kenyan two-time Olympic champion and former marathon world record holder finished at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to enthusiastic support, shaving two seconds off the previous race record.

Kipchoge’s official marathon personal best is 2:01:09, set at the 2022 Berlin Marathon, where he improved his own world record. He had first broken the world record in Berlin in 2018 with 2:01:39.

He also made history on October 12, 2019, becoming the first person to cover the marathon distance in under two hours, clocking 1:59:40.2 at the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna. That specially organised performance was not eligible for an official world record because of the assistance provided during the attempt.

The Melbourne victory was Kipchoge’s first marathon win since Berlin in 2023 and the 17th of his career over the distance. His appearance forms part of his project to run a marathon on all seven continents.

Kipchoge pulled clear late in the race and reached the MCG with enough time to acknowledge the cheering spectators during the final half-lap. Australia’s Thomas Do Canto finished second in 2:10:35, 1:25 behind the winner.

New Zealand’s Camille French took the women’s title in 2:28:25. Australia’s Sinead Diver followed 24 seconds later, while Ireland’s Nichola Sheridan completed the podium in 2:29:13.
